Mothering as a Work of Art
Mothering as a Work of Art: A Black Mama Anthology is more than just a collection of stories; it is a testament to the strength and diversity of Black motherhood. Through personal narratives, essays, and reflections, I offer a look at the complexities of mothering and healing in a world that often overlooks our voices. This book is a celebration of Black motherhood, an invitation into reclaiming the narratives concerning Black motherhood, and a powerful tool for personal and collective healing.
As a mama and a psychologist, I’ve seen how little space is made for the emotional experiences of Black women—especially mothers. Our stories are too often erased or dismissed. In Mothering as a Work of Art, I wanted to create a space where Black women could share their truth and find connection. This book is my contribution to a larger conversation about healing, strength, and the art of mothering in its many forms.
This anthology is a labor of love born from my own journey towards healing following a traumatic childbirth experience. This book provides a sacred space for Black mamas to share their personal narratives, celebrating the beauty, resilience, and challenges of mothering while Black. It is a celebration of those shared experiences and a catalyst for building community and fostering healing through the power of storytelling.
This book can also help partners, family members, and other community members better understand the experiences of the mothers in their lives.
What’s Inside
Within its pages, readers will find a series of personal narratives, reflections, and creative pieces from myself and other Black mothers that explore the joys, challenges, and triumphs of pregnancy, childbirth, loss, and everything in between. It also covers themes of:
